Air Traffic Controller in North America

1. (Preferable) 2- or 4-year degree from an Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative would highly set you out

2. Be a citizen in that country

​

3. Pass a medical evaluation and drug screening

​

4. Pass a background/criminal check

​

5. Complete a training course at the Federal Aviation Administration Academy before reaching the age of 31

​

6. Must pass the Federal Aviation Administration pre-employment test with a score of 70 percent or higher

​

7. Be able to write, speak, and understand the English Language

​

8. Be able to relocate to a Federal Aviation Administration facility

​

9. Pass qualifying test for a Federal Aviation Administration training program

​

  • Completing the AT-CTI Program: If you have a recommendation letter from your school, you will be eligible to take the Air Traffic Selection and Training exam. Averagely, students take these exams before their graduation, but they need to meet the school’s requirements. Not only this, but they are also required to pass the Federal Aviation Administration pre-employment test, which is tests based on your personality and fitness.

 

  • Not completing the AT-CTI program: You can apply during the Federal Aviation Administration enrollment periods for Air Traffic Controllers, but hiring staff prefer people who have prior experience, furthermore, entry-level civilians must perform the pre-employment test and pass it to be considered for the Federal Aviation Administration training.

10. Complete the Federal Aviation Administration training program

  • The training will take place in Oklahoma City, United States of America. Averagely, it approximately takes 2-5 months to complete, depends on your background and prior experience.

11. Gain experience

  • After graduation from the Academy, trainees will be assigned to an Air Traffic Control facility as development controllers, where you will provide pilots with basic flight and airport information. As you gain more experience you will advance into roles that have greater responsibility

12. Receive a certification

  • You will need to pass a knowledge and practical test and meet the experience of on-job-training. This will usually take 2-4 years to complete the training
